US News

On Thursday, Former President Donald Trump turned himself in for the fourth instance this year, in connection with a case centered around his attempts to overturn his defeat in the 2020 general election in Georgia.

The investigation, led by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, began shortly after a recording of a phone call on January 2, 2021, between Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger was made public. During this call, the former president suggested that Raffensperger could “locate 11,780 votes,” which would be just enough to surpass Joe Biden’s count.

Trump, a member of the Republican party, has characterized his conversation with Raffensperger as “perfect” and has portrayed the legal proceedings by the Democratic district attorney as politically motivated.

CASE INVOLVING CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS:

Special counsel Jack Smith has been overseeing two federal investigations related to Trump, both of which have led to charges against the ex-president.

The initial charges resulting from these investigations emerged in June, accusing Trump of mishandling top-secret documents at his Florida estate. The indictment alleged that Trump repeatedly enlisted aides and lawyers to help hide records sought by investigators. He also reportedly casually displayed sensitive military plans and a classified map.

An updated indictment issued in July added more charges, alleging that Trump attempted to erase surveillance footage at his Mar-a-Lago property after FBI and Justice Department investigators visited in June 2022 to retrieve classified documents he had taken after leaving the White House. The new indictment also accused him of wrongfully retaining a document he is said to have shown to visitors in New Jersey.

In total, Trump is facing 40 felony charges related to the classified documents case. The most severe charge carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

Walt Nauta, a valet for Trump, and Carlos De Oliveira, the property manager at Trump’s Florida estate, have both been implicated in the case. They are facing charges of conspiring to conceal surveillance footage from federal investigators and providing false information about it.

While Trump and Nauta have both entered pleas of not guilty, De Oliveira’s arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday.

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon has scheduled a trial start date for May 20, 2024. If this date holds, it could mean that a potential trial would begin well into the presidential nomination process, likely after the Republican nominee becomes clear, though prior to their official selection at the Republican National Convention.

ELECTION INTERFERENCE CASE:

Smith’s second case against Trump was revealed in August. The indictment, comprising four counts, alleges that the former president engaged in felonious activities to overturn the 2020 election results leading up to the violent insurrection by his supporters at the U.S. Capitol.

The charges include conspiring to defraud the U.S. government and obstructing an official procedure: the certification of Biden’s victory in Congress.  surrendered The indictment outlines how Trump persistently claimed victory in the election, despite knowing that it was false. It further describes his attempts to influence state officials, Vice President Mike Pence, and ultimately Congress to overturn the legitimate results.

After weeks of spreading false information about the election outcome, prosecutors assert that Trump tried to leverage the Capitol violence as a justification to further delay the vote counting that confirmed his loss.

In the charging documents, reference is made to several unnamed co-conspirators, including legal professionals within and outside of the government. These individuals are alleged to have collaborated with Trump in efforts to overturn the election and endorsed legally questionable strategies, such as promoting fictitious elector slates in battleground states won by Biden.

The Trump campaign dismissed the charges as baseless and questioned the lengthy duration it took to bring them.

HUSH MONEY SCHEME:

In March, Trump became the first former U.S. president to face criminal charges. He was indicted in New York on state charges related to payments made during the 2016 presidential campaign to hide allegations of extramarital affairs.

He pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. Each charge could lead to a maximum of four years in prison, though the possibility of imprisonment upon conviction remains uncertain.

The charges are linked to a series of checks issued to his attorney Michael Cohen to reimburse him for his role in paying off adult film actress Stormy Daniels, who claimed to have had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006. These payments were recorded in internal company documents as payments for a legal retainer that prosecutors assert was nonexistent.

The former president’s next court appearance is scheduled for January 4, preceding the commencement of the Republican nominating process.

NEW YORK CIVIL CASES:

New York Attorney General Letitia James has filed a lawsuit against Trump and the Trump Organization, alleging that they provided misleading information to banks and tax authorities regarding asset valuations to secure loans and tax benefits.

This lawsuit could result in civil penalties against the organization if James, a member of the Democratic party, is successful. She seeks a $250 million fine and a prohibition on Trump’s business activities in New York. While Manhattan prosecutors examined the same alleged behavior, they opted not to pursue criminal charges.

A civil trial is scheduled in state court for October.

In a separate civil case in federal court in New York, Trump was found liable in May for sexually assaulting and defaming former magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll during the mid-1990s. The jury dismissed Carroll’s claim of rape in a dressing room.

Trump was ordered to pay Carroll $5 million. He has appealed the decision and vehemently denied the allegations. In July, a federal judge upheld the jury’s verdict against Trump, rejecting his argument that the award was excessive.
