In Mizoram, 17 laborers were killed when an under-construction railway bridge collapsed on Wednesday. News agency PTI quoted officials as saying that the accident took place at 10 am in Sairang, 20 km from the capital Aizawl.

35 to 40 laborers were working on the bridge during the incident. The bridge was being built over the Kurung River connecting Bairabi with Sairang. Sabyasachi De, CPRO of North-East Frontier Railway, told news agency ANI – A rescue team has been sent to the spot by the railways. On the other hand, PM and Railways have announced compensation expressing grief over the incident.

The girder between the third and fourth pillars fell 341 feet

There are total 4 pillars in the bridge. It can be seen in the video that the girder between the third and fourth pillars has broken and fallen. All the laborers were working on this girder. The height of the bridge from the ground is 104 meters ie 341 feet. That is, the height of the bridge is higher than Qutub Minar.

PM and Ministry of Railways announced the compensation

Expressing grief over the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav have announced compensation for the families of the deceased. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the victim’s family and Rs 10 lakh to the Railways. Apart from this, 50 thousand rupees will be given to the injured on behalf of PMO. At the same time, the Railways has announced to give compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the seriously injured and Rs 50 thousand to the minor injured.

CM of Mizoram said – Rescue operation is going on

Mizoram CM Joram Thanga has shared pictures and videos of the accident on social media. He wrote – the administration is running a rescue operation. Thanks also to those who helped people during the accident.

Laborers from Bengal also lost their lives in the accident

On the other hand, CM Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal has also expressed grief over the incident. Mamata said- Some laborers from Malda district of West Bengal were also working in the project. The Chief Secretary of Bengal has been asked to contact the Mizoram government to get information. The Malda administration has been directed to provide all possible help to the victim’s family.
